A place where each other has no meaning

A place where 'each other' has no meaning.

When I visited Durham cathedral, visitors walked slowly up the aisle, pausing at the tombs and then walking on into the strong sunlight flooding down from the Rose window. I imagined them being spirits, rising towards the light. As they vanished, they became the sunlight. It reminded me of Rumi's poem, “A Great Wagon,” where he writes... "When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase “each other” doesn’t make any sense.". Sitting in the cathedral, where so many lives had passed and so much history was present, I thought about the phrase "each other" and how, in that moment, it was meaningless. But that 'place where each other has no meaning' is not just in the cathedral, I think it is within us at all times. If we can let go of judgements and just be loving kindness, we find that connection which makes us all one.

This drawing is inspired from a line in Rumi's poem “A Great Wagon,” with the middle verse as follows:
“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase “each other” doesn’t make any sense.
The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.”
