When I speak I don't know what you hear

We filter our senses to that which we need to navigate and survive in our world. Hence we don't see ultraviolet like a bee, but instead we can see the colour red, which the bee can't. A flower, to a bee, is therefore very different to how we see it. The world we perceive is an image created by our thoughts and an illusion, all be it an essential one to help us survive.

In a similar way, we filter how we perceive others. Our first impressions are coloured by our past experiences and so we create social categorisations, based on factors like age, gender, looks, context, occupation and race. For our survival, we need to assess people quickly and this process can make errors. We amass a collection of beliefs and assumptions about how certain traits are linked to other characteristics and behaviors. We then project those assumptions onto those we meet.

Add to the mix the insecurities of our own egos and we create an image of someone heavily filtered through our illusions. Tennessee Williams summed it up perfectly....

"Nobody sees anybody truly but all through the flaws of their own egos. That is the way we all see ...each other in life. Vanity, fear, desire, competition-- all such distortions within our own egos-- condition our vision of those in relation to us. Add to those distortions to our own egos the corresponding distortions in the egos of others, and you see how cloudy the glass must become through which we look at each other. That's how it is in all living relationships except when there is that rare case of two people who love intensely enough to burn through all those layers of opacity and see each other's naked hearts.”
