Looking within.

Looking within.

Within the figure is a simple labyrinth which is different to a maze, in so far as there is only one path, with no dead ends. It is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness and combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The journey takes me to the centre and then on the same path back again. I like the idea of the centre being empty.

Emptiness in Buddhism refers not to nothingness, but the interdependence of all phenomena, both mental and physical. Emptiness in this context is therefore 'empty of separation'. Your existence is totally dependent upon the existence of everything else. This idea then challenges the idea of a 'self'. In reality, the self is a delusion. It is a delusion created by our thoughts and helps us navigate the world.

If I look deeply within myself, I find this emptiness of separation. When I return to being a 'self', ideas of right and wrong, fame or fortune or even birth and death have less meaning. They are replaced with a feeling of interconnectedness and a greater awareness of beauty.

Below are waves, rising and returning to the ocean, eternally connected to one another and to the ocean as a whole.

The words 'I' or 'you' no longer make any sense - signed limited edition print.

Inspired by an extract of Rumi's poem 'A great wagon'.
"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’ doesn’t make any sense." ~ Rumi
